After apprehending a 42-year-old man who was spotted on Arnold Close Street, police were told a second suspect jumped into an SUV and headed to Noblet Street. An officer and his four-legged partner, Rusty, were on foot patrol on Noblet Street just before 4am when they saw a man riding an SUV through the garden area of the apartment building.

The officer confronted the man, who then allegedly pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed him in the hand. Despite allegedly making repeated attempts to stab the dog and the officer again, Rusty defended his handlers by biting the man.
The man was still holding the screwdriver when more police arrived.
Paramedics treated the officer for injuries to his hand and a closer examination found Rusty was uninjured – all thanks to his stab-resistant harness.
The 27-year-old from Findon was arrested and taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he was treated for dog bite injuries. The man is expected to be charged with a string of offenses including attempting to cause death or serious injury to a working animal, assaulting essential emergency personnel, contempt of police and possession of an object.
He was refused bail to appear in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday. Rusty and his agent will take to the streets on Thursday night.
